From staff reports The Serra High boys basketball team took an 18 1 record and No. 1 ranking in the CIF Southern Section's III A division into the Jordan High gymnasium Monday afternoon. And it only took a little more than the first two minutes of the fourth quarter for the host Panthers to understand why. The Serra Cavaliers went on a 17 0 run over the first two minutes and 12 seconds of the quarter and cruised past Jordan, 77 59, during the second Martin Luther King Jr./Dr. Floyd Massey Jr. Classic. In the first of two varsity games played Monday afternoon, Compton improved its winning streak to six by holding off cross town opponent Centennial, 67 60. Jordan trailed 50 49 when two free throws by sophomore forward Isiah Hicks with 42 seconds to go and a layup by senior center Darius Williams with 12 seconds remaining got the Panthers (9 9) to within one after three quarters. But the first two minutes plus of the quarter were disastrous for Coach Ron Massey's club. On their first six possessions, the Panthers had five turnovers and a shot by Hicks was swatted by a Cavalier. Conversely, Coach Dwan Hurt's Serra squad got a pair of 3s apiece from guards Keith Shamburger and Vaughn Autry, a layup by Jordan Mitchell following a pass by sophomore Marquise Lee, two free throws by Lee and another by Shamburger. Yes, there are a lot of reasons why the Cavaliers have won 16 games in a row since dropping a 58 54 decision to the Poly Jackrabbits in the championship game of the Pacific Shores Tournament at Redondo High on Dec. 5. "They've got so many shooters," Massey said, shaking his head. Indeed, the Cavaliers have jump shooters galore in Shamburger (who hit four 3s and scored 19 points), Autry (who hit four 3s and scored 16) and Craig Carter (14 points), along with a formidable pair of post players in the 6 7 Mitchell who signed with Cal State Northridge and 6 8 junior Ronnie Stevens. The Panthers have dropped four straight games, three of those in Moore League competition. Jordan got 13 points from senior guard Jesse Jones and 10 apiece from Hicks and senior guard Raynard Tyler. The Panthers will play at Wilson on Wednesday. In the first game the Centennial Apaches (11 5) led by eight points, 20 12, early in the second quarter and by four, 52 48, after a 3 pointer by Harrison Hawkins with 6:43 to go in the fourth quarter. But the Tarbabes went on a 16 0 run that was capped by a layup by junior point guard Allan Guei with 1:31 to go. After a 3 by Deonte Burton, who finished with 28 points, got the Apaches to within 66 60, the Tarbabes turned the ball over but Burton and Thomas Hammock on the same possessions missed on 3s that would have gotten their team to within one possession of tying the score. Senior forward Cliff Sims led the Tarbabes with 27 points while Guei added 17. Coach Tony Thomas' team plays at Millikan on Wednesday in a Moore League game and, the Tarbabes hope, will take a 5 0 league record into a Moore showdown at Poly Friday night. "When we agreed to play them (the Apaches) last summer, I didn't realize that were going to be this good," Thomas said. "So I was really worried about this game because I didn't want us to hurt the momentum we've built in league." At 9 9, the Tarbabes are at .500 for the first time since the first week of December. Frank Burlison Millikan 74, Lakewood 49: Andrew Scott and Devon James combined for 29 points, and the Rams (10 9, 2 3) used a 14 0 run at the end of the first quarter to pull away for an easy Moore League victory over the Lancers. Jeremiah Blandin added 12 points off the bench for Millikan, and Jared Garber led Lakewood with 14. Girls Soccer CAMS (8 3 0, 3 0 0) got a hat trick from Connie Friedman and two more goals from Gabby McKenzie and a clean sheet from goalie Leah Spaulding in a 6 0 Delphic League win over Downey Calvary Chapel. So before you go on choosing your running shoes, you have to know the type of your foot. This is one of the factors you should know and you have to be very careful with the running shoes that you are going to buy because according to studies, most foot injuries are caused by poor footwear. So if you are planning to run or if you are an aspiring runner, the right running shoes are your best investments. Foot pronation is one of the most important factors to consider when buying a pair of running shoes because this can affect the impact on the foot when you run, walk or jog. There are basically 3 types of foot pronation: overpronation, average pronation, and underpronation. If you are overpronator, that means you have low foot arch. Overpronators don't absorb shock efficiently that's why you need the right type of shoe for you. If you are an average pronator, you have a moderate foot arch and the best thing is that you wouldn't have problems in finding a pair of running shoes. And if you are an underpronator, that means you have a high foot arch. If you search on some brands with good reviews, you will find Mizuno shoes on the top list. This is because Mizuno shoes are designed for running and other sports activities. You also have to understand that there are different types of shoes for certain activities so you better choose wisely. If you are looking for the best type of Mizuno running shoes for overpronators, motion control running shoes are ideal for you because these shoes are specifically designed to correct the problems with flat foot. These shoes basically have a medial post in the sole and there is more cushioning and supports the low arches of your foot. Some of Mizuno shoes that are designed for flatfooted runners are the Mizuno Wave Renegade 4 and Mizuno Wave Alchemy 9. For average pronators, stability running shoes are the ideal shoes for you because it can help improve your running performance. Some Mizuno shoes that are designed for neutral arches are Mizuno Wave Alchemy 8, Mizuno Wave Nirvana 5, and Mizuno Wave Inspire 5. Another thing to consider is the fitting and the comfort your running shoes can give. Mizuno running shoes are best known to provide the perfect fitting for different types of feet. Mizuno shoes are also best in providing comfort when it comes to running shoes and other performance shoes. "New York City by far has more payphones than any other city," said Nicholas Sbordone, a spokesman for the city government. For years, there have been attempts by private companies to keep these data nodes relevant in the era of the cellphone by adding Wi Fi. Verizon, for example, talked up access to Wi Fi from its payphones for customers of its landline Internet service. And TCC Teleplex did a pilot project of a paid Wi Fi service. ANALYSIS: Exchange Dog Poo For Free Wi Fi Now the City has taken a baby step, persuading contractors who run payphones to add free Wi Fi to ten of them hitting each borough as a trial to see how they go over with New Yorkers. "You might not necessarily stop to use Wi Fi at a payphone if you're walking by it's not in a place that's inviting to sit in," said Sbordone. So the city has targeted payphones near parks and other public spaces for the trial. Why would the payphone providers Van Wagner and Titan give away Wi Fi for free? Perhaps to hedge bets. Public telephones are far from a growing industry in a country where nearly everyone has a cellphone (and often a smartphone). But most laptops and tablets are not connected to cellular service, and with most wireless carriers imposing data caps, offloading to free Wi Fi might be an appealing option for smartphones, as well. HOWSTUFFWORKS: How Wi Fi Works Or it might not be. The City is waiting to find out by conducting a request for information project to get citizen feedback. The current agreement between the City and payphone providers expires in October 2014, and the City is hoping to figure out what to do with the stations before then. Sbordone said that City payphones might, for example, also become charging stations, if that's what people want. Nike Free Run 3 Anthracite Gray Reflect Silver New Green Women Last year, Jaguars fans became familiar with the Leo position, a lighter defensive end whose specialty was rushing the quarterback. This year, coach Gus Bradley has deleted the Sam linebacker from the playbook and replaced it with the Otto, a physical/athletic/versatile player who will be positioned along the line of scrimmage. The goals in creating the Otto: Be more multiple in their looks without radically changing the personnel, help a run defense that was 29th in the NFL last year, provide another option for a pass rush that was tied for last in the league and have a player who is comfortable in coverage. Dekoda Watson was signed on the second day of free agency from Tampa Bay to be the Otto. "It's something that fits me and my ability," he said. Jaguars linebackers coach Robert Saleh calls the Otto, "a pretty cool position. We can line him up in a bunch of different places, and it's a unique position because of the things we'll ask him to do." The Jaguars spent most of their free agent money to improve a defense that wasn't stout or opportunistic, adding Watson, Red Bryant, Ziggy Hood and Chris Clemons. They will all play a role, but watching Watson's potential impact will be intriguing. The players were introduced to the new position in late April, and they instantly saw the possibilities. "It's exciting to know we're going to have some people who will now concentrate on specific aspects of their game and not have to worry about what the other two linebackers will be doing," Mike linebacker Paul Posluszny said. Posluszny and Will linebacker Geno Hayes will remain lined up 5 yards off the line of scrimmage, but their roles won't be completely in concert with the Otto. In Seattle, where Bradley was the defensive coordinator from 2009 12 and Saleh a defensive assistant from 2011 13, the Seahawks deploy Bruce Irvin as a Sam linebacker. The Jaguars' Otto will have some but not all of the characteristics in addition to a different name. "Some of the things we'll ask the Otto to do, I'm not sure they're asking Bruce to do," Bradley said. Said Saleh: "We have a different vision for our guy." That vision will most likely be a heavier involvement in the run game and coverage. Posluszny said the Jaguars' linebackers watched Irvin cut ups to get a feel for what the Otto will bring to the defense. Charting Irvin's activity in Seattle's loss last year at Indianapolis showed how versatile the Jaguars expect Watson to be. Irvin played 35 of 63 snaps (not including two Colts kneel downs) and rushed the passer 15 times, dropped into coverage 11 times and played the run nine times. Irvin lined up at the line of scrimmage on all but one snap. "Our guy will be near the line of scrimmage, close to the tight end and have a good, physical presence," Posluszny said. Irvin started plays on the weak (no tight end) and strong (tight end) sides of the formation. "That's what our guy will do," Bradley said. And Irvin played six snaps as a Leo, sometimes inside of the defensive end. "On third down, maybe our Otto is a Leo," Bradley said. "When we crunch the numbers and which guys are [active for the game], the Otto may be our third Leo or an extra rusher, and that's why [the Jaguars signed] Dekoda. He can run. He's a third or fourth Leo." The pass rushing aspect of the Otto will be almost entirely new to the Jaguars' scheme. Thomas) came off the field in passing situations, replaced by a fifth defensive back. Reviewing four games from 2013 Week 1 against Kansas City, Week 10 at Tennessee and the Week 12 and 14 games against Houston the Jaguars used a linebacker 38 times to rush the quarterback, and it was all Posluszny or Hayes except for one by Allen. In the last two years, Jaguars linebackers have a combined 7.5 sacks. Watson played only 24.4 percent of Tampa Bay's defensive snaps last year, but the video showed the Jaguars' coaches enough to project him as the starting Otto. Watson arrived in Jacksonville on the night of March 12 hours after the open market opened and heard Bradley's pitch. "I loved it," Watson said. "I've done a little bit of everything, and that's what has really helped me out the more you can do, the better off you'll be. It was pretty much, 'Where do I sign?' I felt at home here. The presentation from Coach Gus said a lot."
