The Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and Lincoln Independent Business Association had appealed to the board to consider a co location agreement with a local business in part because it would provide business to local companies. They also wanted the district to compare costs with local proposals. But on Tuesday, board members decided it was more prudent to use their own building. "I did not see anything that led me to believe there would be any long term savings," board member Don Mayhew said. The district will use the older boiler room to house the servers, routers and other equipment that run its 139 computer systems and power its 12,000 computers. The old data center was in the district office building that was destroyed in a May 30 fire. The equipment is being housed temporarily at the University of Nebraska. Having the district own and operate the data center will be more secure than relying on a company that could decide to raise its rates, leaving the districtlittle choice but to agree to higher costs, Mayhew said. Co locating the data center would mean higher operational costs and lower up front building costs, he said. But the higher operating costs would put more of a strain on the general fund budget. Also, insurance money and capital funds will pay for renovating the boiler room. The urgency for a new data center increased because of the fire, but district officials had been talking about building it and already had earmarked $1.1 million to renovate the boiler room. Shop The Latest Men Nike Free Run 4.0 V2 Black University Red,Men Nike Free Run 3.0 Total Orange Neon Reflective Silver Wolf Grey Black History month has come and gone. Seems it gets shorter for me each year even though this was a Leap Year. Last month, we tackled a topic that stirred up a lot of conversation and discussion regarding the gap in computer usage between black students and white students. One favorite testimony absolutely brought tears to my eyes and has inspired me to work even harder on conveying my thoughts on this month's topic. "Thanks for the information and the stories. thank again " Did you know that it has been documented that there is a 36% gap in participation in kindergarten orientation/class visitation programs between schools serving low minority populations and schools serving high minority populations? Source: NCES analysis So basically, the data suggests that when there is an opportunity to visit the school at the beginning of the school year for a munchkin, our minority parents are not as visible when minorities are the majority population. Why would this be the case? In past discussions with friends and colleagues it has been argued that the teachers are unwilling to stay late and parents in high minority populations must work to keep a roof over their heads. It is assumed that in low minority populations, there may be a stay at home parent or a managerial parent who has more flexibility to be at the school during the day. Many say that teachers will not stay at the school beyond the work day for a variety of reasons and a Saturday event would be unheard of scheduling. There is a need to probe the situation because at the end of the day, a munchkin's well being in school is potentially put at risk. Why? Self esteem is such an easy thing to build and destroy during those early years starting school. In order to strike that balance we have decided that we needed to dedicate a spot in the house for a school calendar to be posted or readily available for everyone in the house to see each day. We try to proactively talk to our munchkins about how they feel about us attending or not attending different events. Then we try to really assess what impact this has on her being able to enjoy learning. For example, we all went on both of her fall field trips. One was a trip to a pumpkin patch and the other was a trip to the Jamestown Settlement. We reflect upon what sacrifice it took to make those experiences possible and how we have to work hard together in order to be able to do it again in the future. We stay in prayer to ask for guidance on what we need to do to be there for her in the event of a school activity and alas we have a schedule conflict. It is hard to stay involved, but perhaps you may remember as a child how important it was for someone in your family to come out and cheer you on at times. So even if a parent is unable to make the event, the next best thing is to substitute with an aunt, uncle, cousin or family friend. The more the merrier. Sometimes it is those after school activities that can be the glue to keep a child's passionate flame burning for school. This month, why not call the kids in your immediate and extended family to see if there are upcoming events or activities in which they would like to participate? Spring break is coming up. Perhaps this is a good time to help out a family member in seeing a different part of the country. My sister has invited the girls to Detroit so we will most likely bare the cold and enjoy the visit. So the bottom line to this month's discussion is to see if we can better understand what active participation by parents in the school truly means to the child. That can only happen with a face to face discussion. When it matters, then perhaps we can make it a higher priority to be there for him or her. This series is intended to be a work in progress. What I am doing as an individual, and what others are doing as well. Together we can learn some new things and reinforce some things we already knew. What do you think? Can we work together? Joan E. Men Nike Free Run 4.0 V2 Black University Red MONDAY, March 24, 2014 (HealthDay News) A new wireless pacemaker appears safe and feasible for use, potentially advancing the technology that cardiologists use to maintain heart rhythm in patients, according to results from a new clinical trial. Doctors successfully implanted the device in 32 out of 33 patients. Of these, two people who received the pacemaker developed side effects a complication free rate of 94 percent. Complications for the patient with unsuccessful implantation, however, proved to be severe. After three months, the new pacemakers continued to function well, the researchers reported in the April 8 issue of the journal Circulation. They expect to report longer term outcomes later this year. The concept of a self contained wireless pacemaker has been around more than 40 years, and this first successful use of such a device to treat humans is considered a step forward for cardiology. "This is an advance that will have a huge impact on the field," said Dr. Bradley Knight, a cardiologist at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a spokesman for the American Heart Association. Vivek Reddy, director of the cardiac arrhythmia service at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. "These leads are the weak link for the whole system," Reddy said of the wires. The leads tend to break over time, and when they do doctors must extract and replace them. Unfortunately, the wires sometimes grow into the wall of the vein, and laser surgery could be required to cut them free. This new wireless pacemaker contains its own pulse generator, and is affixed directly inside the right ventricle of the heart through a catheter run up a vein from a patient's leg or groin, Reddy said. The nonsurgical procedure is faster and easier than the surgery currently required to implant a pacemaker, the researchers said. The unit itself is smaller than a triple A battery 6 millimeters in diameter and about 42 millimeters long. "The total amount of space it displaces is about 1 cc of fluid, so it's very, very small," Reddy said. The wireless pacemaker is expected to operate for eight to 14 years before it runs out of juice, Reddy said. The pacemaker is manufactured by Nanostim Inc., of Sunnyvale, Calif. The study was funded by Nanostim, which, according to the study, employs two of the researchers and has provided several more with grant support. Reddy also has stock options in the company. The clinical trial for the device involved 33 patients at two hospitals in Prague and one in Amsterdam. The average age of the patients was 77, and two thirds were men. One patient experienced complications during the implant procedure, and this case highlights one of the potential problems with the new pacemaker, Reddy and Knight said. Since the device must be placed inside the heart, there is a risk that the heart muscle can be torn during the procedure. That's what happened to the 33rd patient, who underwent emergency surgery to repair the tear but later died after suffering a stroke. Two patients who successfully received the implant later developed complications. In one patient, the pacemaker drifted into another heart chamber through a hole in the person's heart wall left by a birth defect. Doctors discovered the problem, removed the device in about six minutes and replaced it with another wireless pacemaker, according to the study. The second patient with complications experienced fainting and rapid heart beat, and doctors ended up replacing the pacemaker with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator. Also, the pacemaker initially would be of limited use in the United States because it can only provide pacing to one chamber of the heart. Between 75 percent and 80 percent of patients in the United States need pacemakers that help control the rhythm of both the upper and lower chambers of their heart, Reddy said. This wireless pacemaker would at first be useful in treating people who have atrial fibrillation an irregular heartbeat since they need pacing only in their right ventricle, Knight said. It also could help people with less severe heart problems who need only intermittent pacing. Knight said he believes problems related to heart tears and single chamber pacing will be resolved as newer, smaller models of wireless pacemaker become available. "This is just the beginning," he said. "These things will get smaller and be able to be placed in multiple locations in the heart." For example, dual chamber pacemaking could be achieved using a pair of the wireless devices one in the upper atrial chamber and another in the lower ventricular chamber if communication is established between them to sync their pulses. Clinical trials for the device already have begun in the United States, Reddy said. The first American received a wireless pacemaker about a month ago at Mount Sinai Hospital. Food and Drug Administration by 2016. The wireless pacemaker currently is available to patients outside the United States, Reddy said. The medical device firm Medtronic has developed a competing wireless pacemaker, Reddy said, and clinical trials for that device started in late 2013. Because of the competition, Reddy expects that the new pacemakers will be more expensive than current devices but not exorbitantly so. "I'm sure they'll charge a premium in the beginning, but if there's any competition they can't charge too much more," he said.
